Meeting Notes

The November 20, 2014 meeting of the Los Angeles InDesign User Group was one in a series of presentations on how InDesign is used in specific industries. Kevin Sheffield, currently Design Technology Manager at Kate Spade & Co., demonstrated the typical fashion design workflow with an emphasis on InDesign in the process. It was held at Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, more commonly known as FIDM, the internationally recognized private college dedicated to educating students for the fashion, graphics, interior design and entertainment industries.

At Kate Spade, Kevin is responsible for managing all global technology (both software and hardware) related to apparel, textile, graphics and marketing. With a career spanning 16 years, he began by working as a fashion designer, subsequently holding positions both as a technical and textile designer. Kevin has also worked as a professional lecturer and has hosted classes and events for Adobe MAX, Marist College, 24 Seven Inc. and Gerber Technologies.

Kevin began the evening's presentation with an overview of the Creative Cloud and its new features, then explained now each application is relevant to the fashion industry. He also linked all of this to PLM solutions, which are specific to the fashion industry. Kevin ended his presentation by taking a number of questions from the audience, many of which had to do with his suggestion to use InDesign -- in certain circumstances -- rather than Illustrator, the program that most of those already in fashion were familiar with and use.

LAID was able to hold the meeting at FIDM due to the efforts of Stephen Reaves, FIDM's Director of Graphic Design, and the courtesy of FIDM administration. LAID thanks both for their efforts in making the premises available. FIDM opened its doors in 1969 with a staff of three educated a student body of seven. Today, the college offers bachelor's and associates degree programs in 26 majors with 7,000 students and a faculty of over 500.

LAID also acknowledges the help and assistance of Randy Dunbar and Robin Schneider in making this meeting happen.
