Preparing PDF Files for Printing and Field Trip to International Printing Museum
Thursday, July 19, 2018
6:30-7 p.m. Tour on your own
7-10 p.m. Regular meeting and curated tour
The July meeting was created backward. Typically we come up with a presentation and then find a suitable location. For this meeting, we were granted an opportunity to meet at—and tour—the International Printing Museum. Needing an InDesign-related topic that was appropriate, we decided upon "Preparing PDF Files for Printing."
But to make things a little more interesting, we will have two presenters, each speaking on PDF file preparation from a slightly different perspective. Rob Swaine of ColorNet Press, will speak from the perspective of a high-end sheet-fed printer. Nola Tamblyn, Pre-Press Systems Analyst at Southwest Offset Printing will talk about preparing files for web offset. Each will speak for just 10 minutes or so allowing time for questions.
Following the break, Mark Barbour, Director and Curator of the International Printing Museum, will lead working demonstrations of the antique printing presses and equipment. We will learn about the origins of printing and the evolution of printing technology including a live demonstration of letter type casting, and a rare glimpse at a working linotype machine, the backbone of the newspaper industry from the 1890s to the 1970s. LAIDUG members will experience what it takes to set up a printing job, circa 1450 and actually print a bible page on the Gutenberg Press.
There is ample free parking in the Museum parking lot as well as on the street. No restrictions.
The bona fide LAIDUG member who travels the farthest specifically to attend the meeting will receive her or his choice of any one deal at MightyDeals up to $50.00. You need to prove to us that you traveled farthest to attend this meeting. Having recently moved to the area from somewhere else won't cut it. Be prepared to show us indication of your current residence—perhaps a driver's license or a utility bill. Decision of the administrators of the Los Angeles InDesign User Group is final.
LAIDUG meetings are free. The group is supported by raffles of donated prizes. No one is required to participate in the raffles. Raffle tickets are: 1 for $3, 2 for $5, 5 for $10, 11 for $20, 24 for $40, 32 for $50 and 65 for $100. All major credit cards are accepted.
