PDF Blow-Out and Ad Agency Tour
Thursday September 20, 2012
7-10 p.m.
Designory, 211 East Ocean Blvd. #100, Long Beach, CA 90802
Long Beach
Continuing the policy of holding meetings in various locations so that it’s in someone’s backyard at least once during the year, the September meeting will be held in Long Beach.
Last Minute Parking News
Free parking under the building if you enter between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Enter from Ocean Blvd. You can still come to the meeting, of course, no matter when you arrive. It's just that people who arrive within this window get to park for free. Other parking options are street parking and local lots.
Meeting Topics: (1) PDF Blow-Out, and (2) Ad Agency Tour
The September 20 meeting will be a two-parter. First we will learn about PDFs, then we will take a tour of a real live advertising agency.
Markzware’s Doug Rosen will talk about making PDFs, including typical gotchas and how to solve them. He will then preside over a robust open Q&A session. Be sure to bring all the questions you’ve had about PDFs but didn’t know whom to ask. The first half of the evening will end with a demonstration of PDF2DTP for Adobe InDesign, Markzware’s brand new utility that converts any standard PDF to a fully editable InDesign document.
Following Rosen’s presentation, Jeffrey Schimsky will lead a tour of the West Coast headquarters of Designory, a global full-service agency with offices in Tokyo, Chicago and Nashville. The journey will begin with a presentation of a live InDesign job presented by Designory graphic artist Paul Carhart. Then we’ll see the innards of an agency whose clients include HP, Columbia Pictures, Audi, ABC, Disney, Dreamworks, Nike Lockheed, Warner Bros. Paramount and Nissan, among others. Whew! That’s a lot to pack into two and a half hours!
About the Presenter and Host
Doug Rosen has been involved in the prepress world since the mid-1980s, starting out as a field service engineer and trainer. He later worked in the trenches for a busy printing company in prepress and training. He has been with Markzware for the past 10 years and is currently a project/product manager.
Jeff Schimsky has been in the field since PageMaker and FreeHand were owned by Aldus--yep, back to version 1. He's been head of IT at Designory for almost 13 years and before that was at Disney for six. This UC Santa Cruz alumnus is the editor of his Masonic Lodge's newsletter and uses the Creative Suite to keep his fingers educated in the software he supports for his agency.
